Job Description
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB: The position is responsible for working collaboratively with the other members of the team in providing training, education, consultation and technical assistance to recipients. Recipients are the staff of nursing homes, adult care homes, and family care homes as well as primary caregivers of individuals who are 60 or older or who have geriatric type symptoms and are residing in private homes. The purpose of these teams is to increase the ability of adults with mental illness to live successfully in a long term care setting and to provide support to caregivers of older adults with mental illnesses that are at risk of psychiatric hospitalization. The teams do not provide direct services to the persons residing at the different facilities or in a home such as counseling case management or therapy but provide support and training to the staff and caregivers.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works independently and collaboratively to develop and deliver educational presentations about a variety of mental illnesses and mental health issues for the staff of nursing homes, adult care homes or family care homes that are providing care for adults with mental illness. These can be facilities identified during discharge planning for individuals who are in a state or other psychiatric hospital preparing to return to the community or facilities currently serving adults with mental illness. Provide education and linkage with services to caregivers who are providing care for individuals in their residential home who are 60 years of age or older with mental illness and at risk for psychiatric hospitalization. In addition GAMHST may provide services to staff working in Senior Centers or other agencies that serve older adults with mental illness. Provide clinical consult on cases as directed. Reviews medication regimens and educates staff in communication with psychiatrist, physician and pharmacist.
QUALIFICATIONS & CREDENTIALING REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from s State accredited school of nursing and one year of experience in psychiatric nursing which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience providing mental health or substance abuse services are essential. The employee must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the NC Board of Nursing.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Person in this position is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparation and analysis of data and figures; viewing a computer terminal; and extensive reading. Physical activity in this position includes crouching, reaching, walking, talking, hearing and repetitive motion of hands, wrists and fingers. Sedentary work with lifting requirements up to 10 pounds, sitting for extended periods of time.
KNOWLEDGE OF JOB: Thorough knowledge of and skill in the application of the practices and principles of professional psychiatric nursing; thorough knowledge of diagnoses and their treatment; considerable knowledge of current social and economic problems and their relationship to mental health; considerable knowledge of available resources and organizations; considerable knowledge of and ability to apply educational methods and training techniques related to psychiatric nursing.
SALARY: Grade/Step is determined by qualification and experience of candidate. Position is full-time salary with comprehensive benefits. This position is exempt from overtime compensation.
